Ten years on, Loewe’s geometric, origami-inspired Puzzle remains as distinctive and sought-after as ever. Far from a seasonal novelty, it swiftly established itself as a modern classic for the Spanish fashion house. Now, as it celebrates its 10th anniversary, here are 10 things to know about the iconic Puzzle.

- The mastermind behind it is none other than Jonathan Anderson, Loewe’s former creative director. Although he departed earlier this year, the design remains central to the Spanish fashion house, appearing in an array of sizes, shapes and colours.

- Not many are aware that the Puzzle was Anderson’s very first bag for Loewe. The original debuted in the spring-summer 2015 men’s collection in an androgynous cuboid crossbody design. Only later was it introduced to the women’s line with an added structured top handle.

- Its signature look draws inspiration directly from the Japanese art of origami. Each bag is crafted from precisely cut leather panels that fit together like a sophisticated jigsaw. This ingenious construction also allows the original to fold completely flat when not in use.

- Versatility is certainly a defining hallmark, since the Puzzle works in at least five different ways. You can either tote it by the top handle or clutch it in hand. The additional leather strap then lets you sling it casually over the shoulder or crossbody. Finally, simply tuck it under the arm for a sleek finish.

- Today, the unambiguously androgynous design appears in both the men’s and women’s collections. While the availability of colours and materials may differ slightly, its gender-fluid appeal makes it a universal favourite.

- Unlike many cult-favourite bags that rely on overt branding and loud logos, the Puzzle typically features only a discreet embossed Anagram. This usually appears at the corner of the front flap, leaving its geometric silhouette to do the talking.

- The style comes in sizes, ranging from mini to large. There are also spin-offs like the Puzzle Edge, which reinforces the familiar cuboid silhouette at the seams. Another is the Puzzle Fold, a simplified tote-and-pouch duo that puts a twist on the original’s origami roots.

- The Puzzle’s iconic panelled structure also makes it an ideal canvas for artistic collaborations and special editions. Key highlights over the years include interpretations inspired by artist Joe Brainard, as well as highly coveted partnerships with Studio Ghibli.

- While classic versions come in shiny calfskin, soft-grained calfskin and satin calfskin, seasonal editions introduce new textures. Notably, the 10th anniversary introduced featherlight nappa lambskin, a buttery-soft material that ages beautifully, developing a gentle slouch over time.

- Weathering the test of time and trends, the Puzzle joins Loewe icons such as the Amazona and Flamenco. Its blend of conceptual design, versatility and craftsmanship ensures it remains a core staple in any discerning bag lover’s wardrobe.
