Once a quiet presence at Hermès, the Picotin steadily climbed the ranks to become one of the maison’s most coveted It-bags. Bucket-shaped and effortlessly chic, it’s now commonly referred to as the Picotin Lock, since versions without the padlock have been discontinued and are now considered vintage.
Loved for its practicality and ease of use, this unassuming icon has earned its place in the modern Hermès line-up. Here are 10 things to know about the Picotin Lock.
- Modelled after the feed bag for measuring a horse’s oats, the Picotin Lock embodies Hermès’ equestrian roots through a clean, utilitarian silhouette.
- Despite the heritage nod, it’s a relatively new design, only introduced in 2002. Season after season, it returns alongside similarly priced counterparts, such as the Garden Party and Herbag, proving its staying power.
- To secure the Picotin Lock’s open top, first thread a slim leather tab through side metal buckles. Then fasten it with the signature Hermès padlock, identical to those on the Birkin and Kelly.
- Its construction is soft and relaxed, with unlined leather showcasing its texture and quality. Made in the Retourne style, it’s sewn inside-out to achieve its signature slouchy edges.
- Today, the bag is most commonly available in three sizes: 18 (PM), 22 (MM) and 26 (GM). The Picotin Lock 18, measuring 19 cm by 18 cm with a roomy 13 cm base, is currently the most coveted.
- As for materials, Taurillon Clemence leather dominates the line for its semi-matte, pebbled grain texture. However, felt and Swift combinations occasionally appear, as seen on the exclusive ‘blue box’ Picotin Go Team.
- Canvas iterations, like the Picotin Pocket, offer a further playful twist on the bucket shape. Of course, don’t forget exotic options, including ostrich and ’touch’ styles with crocodile handles. Then there is also the Picotin Cargo that's mostly canvas with garnishes of leather.
- Beyond the Cadena lock and internal stamp, the bag is logo-free, letting the shape speak for itself.
- The structured base of the Picotin Lock also features four protective metal feet. These clous help shield the precious leather from surfaces, a small but thoughtful detail for everyday use.
- Unlike the Birkin or Kelly, the Picotin Lock isn’t a quota bag. However, its rising popularity, especially in desirable sizes and colours, makes it a tricky find in boutiques. That said, keep an eye out online, as Hermès Singapore recently released a Rouge H Picotin Lock 18 for SGD5200.
