Gucci is marking its six-decade journey in Japan with a captivating exhibition titled ‘Bamboo 1947: Then and Now’. Part of an extended series of experiences that illuminate the connection between Gucci and Japan, the Italian fashion house kicks off the celebration at the Gucci Ginza Gallery from 2 August to 23 September.
Most fittingly, the Gucci Bamboo 1947 bag takes the spotlight, exhibiting the unique collaboration between Japanese tradition and contemporary artistry. The showcase will feature 60 vintage bags primarily sourced from the 80s and 90s. A group of creatives will revitalise each cherished testament to a slice of Gucci history.
Amongst them are esteemed goldsmith and living national treasure Morihito Katsura and his pupil Naoko Ai, as well as luminaries like ceramist Nakazato Hirotsune and lacquerrer Ai Tokeshi. Photographers Daido Moriyama and painters Nami Yokoyama and Yui Yaegashi also lend their visions, with each artist breathing new life into the Bamboo 1947. This echoes Gucci’s commitment to craftsmanship while preserving the bag’s timeless allure.
Following the showcase, each reimagined bag will become a collectible piece of art available for purchase. Planning a trip to visit Tokyo in August and September? Don’t forget to stop by the ‘Bamboo 1947: Then and Now’ exhibition. Admission is free for the public.
