Aside from its dominance in the world of bags, Hermès is also famous for its striking window displays that are analogous to art installations. Case in point, the latest artist windows that are currently on show at Hermès Liat Towers. ‘Checkmate at the Faubourg’ is the result of a collaboration with artist Matthieu Cossé.

The whimsical display against the cityscape reimagines the historic Hermès Faubourg store as an intriguing game of chess. Drawing inspiration from the maison’s 2024 theme The Spirit of the Faubourg, the display sees architectural and decorative elements of the Faubourg transform into lively chess pieces.

Against a surreal landscape of an unfolding sunrise with a floor that morphs into a checkerboard, joyful and witty hand-painted chess pieces take centrestage. The familiar artificer on the roof now takes the form of a bishop, while his horse is now the knight. Even the balusters become pretty pawns in eye-catching hues of green and yellow.

The ‘Checkmate at the Faubourg’ installation by Matthieu Cossé will be on display until August 2024 at Hermès Liat Towers. So step up and go through the looking glass for a momentary and utterly mesmerising escape from reality.
