When Anthony Vaccarello first introduced the Niki, it channelled a look straight out of a 1970s rock wardrobe. Its crinkled vintage leather and intentionally lived-in finish embodied an effortless, slouchy-cool attitude. As a result, it soon became a crowd favourite at Saint Laurent. True to the house’s heritage, the flap showcased the iconic YSL Cassandre in either discreet tonal leather or gleaming silver.

Over the seasons, the tonal leather and silver accents became defining features. Now, however, Saint Laurent reimagines the bag with a striking bronze Cassandre plaque. This new hardware introduces a warmer shine that immediately draws the eye. Meanwhile, the familiar flap silhouette, convertible chain strap and two-compartment structure remain intact. The update feels deliberate, yet refreshingly bold.

This shift also brings the Niki into closer dialogue with its more structured siblings. Think the Loulou and Kate, both known for their front-and-centre bronze-tone Cassandre hardware. Here, Vaccarello expands the visual language without altering the bag’s architecture. The proportions stay consistent, right down to the geometric chevron quilting. Instead, the change lies in tone, offering a new register for the design.

Saint Laurent’s Niki arrives in colours such as Black and Rouge Cabernet across mini, baby and medium sizes. Other variations, like the Niki Tripouch and Niki Shopping Bag, also adopt the bronze-tone Cassandre. Matching chain straps bring a cohesive finish. Altogether, the update broadens the Niki’s appeal while staying firmly rooted in its signature aesthetic.
