Who would have imagined that Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak turns 50 this year? Launched in 1972 at Baselworld, the iconic steel timepiece broke all boundaries with its octagonal-shaped bezel with 8 hexagonal screws encircling the beautiful blue Tapisserie dial, designed by the one and only Gerald Genta.

If anything, 50 years of the Royal Oak is solid proof that the timepiece is a true classic at Audemars Piguet, and the Swiss luxury manufacturer celebrates the masterpiece with a new limited-edition black ceramic Carolina Bucci collaboration.

Interestingly, this is Carolina Bucci’s third collaboration with Audemars Piguet, and the Italian jewellery designer has opted for an all-black ceramic timepiece with an unexpected dial this time around.

The signature Tapisserie is given a multi-coloured treatment that changes under light, and this is made possible with a special technique done using micro-structuring of sapphire plates atop the brass dial. The mirror-like effect is then created via the golden metallisation applied onto the back of the sapphire plates, giving it a beautiful radiance that shines onto the dial for maximum effect.

Do note that each limited-edition 34 MM self-winding timepiece features a different iridescent pattern, making it a unique watch that differs from piece to piece. Other updated elements include the hexagonal pink gold screws and pink gold applied hour-markers that give a lovely contrast, and the pins connecting the links on the bracelet are now directly integrated into the studs for a slightly revised look and feel.

The signature satin finishing with polished chamfers is one of Audemars Piguet’s signature touches, and you can expect the same with these timepieces. The Calibre 5800 makes this a thin and powerful movement that excels in both form and function, and they are limited to just 300 pieces and priced at SGD78,300 each.
