Few bags carry the cultural weight of Louis Vuitton’s Speedy. Born as a compact travel companion, the original quietly built a following that spanned red carpets, sporting arenas and everyday sidewalks. It became, in the truest sense, a bag for everyone. Pharrell Williams understood this when he took the creative reins. Rather than reinvent the icon, he refined it into the Speedy P9.
What sets it apart starts with the material. The bag is crafted in LV Buttersoft leather, a supple calfskin that undergoes double tanning and drum milling. The result is a signature drape its canvas predecessor just didn’t have. This leather settles and collapses with wear, much like a well-loved jacket that moulds to its owner over time. Put simply, it gets better the more you carry it.
The craftsmanship behind the Speedy P9 is equally deliberate. Craftsmen assemble each piece from 60 individual components, taking 240 steps and using 29 customised tools. A screen-printing technique then applies the monogram, yielding an almost hand-painted, artisanal effect. Every detail reinforces the sense that this is a bag built to be lived in, not just looked at.
The range spans four sizes, each with its own carry logic. At 22 cm by 17.5 cm, the Speedy P9 Bandoulière 20 is the most compact of the four. Rolled leather top handles, a name tag, key bell and adjustable strap come standard. It suits those who carry less but carefully consider every item they carry.
The Speedy P9 Bandoulière 25 (SGD12,400), meanwhile, hits the sweet spot for everyday use and offers the widest colour range. Shades run from Bleu and Rouge to seasonal additions like Amethyste, Lemonade and Gold Kintsugi. A removable leather pouch, full lambskin lining and detachable shoulder strap complete the 25 cm by 15 cm package.
Then scaling up, the Speedy P9 Bandoulière 30 measures 32 cm by 22.5 cm and serves as a roomy all-rounder. Think of it as the men’s counterpart to the Speedy Soft 30. The heritage side lock is not only especially prominent at this size. The proportions also look equally good whether you sling it over the shoulder or tote it in hand.
Last but not least, measuring an impressive 40 cm by 26 cm, the Speedy P9 Bandoulière 40 commands attention. Whether in eye-catching Turquoise or the elusive Ultra Black, it instantly generates conversation. Generous enough to double as an overnight bag, it also lets the texture of the buttery-soft leather truly shine.
For now, the Speedy P9 remains available exclusively in Louis Vuitton boutiques. Because this is not a bag you add to cart with a click but best appreciated up close and in person.
