There’s a moment every frequent traveller knows well. You stand at the luggage carousel, watching an endless parade of nondescript bags pass. Then, as if on cue, a Rimowa glides into view. The grooved aluminium or distinctive polycarbonate shell catches the light differently. It serves not just a function, but also makes a statement for travels and commutes.

Now, Rimowa is never about a one-bag-fits-all approach. Instead, the brand builds its identity around a considered range of sizes and materials. Understanding that system makes all the difference when investing in the right piece. More importantly, the range centres on three travel archetypes, each guided by its own philosophy.

Firstly, the Cabin is a stylish carry-on, ideal for short commutes and quick getaways. It slides easily into overhead compartments while keeping things efficient. There’s neither the wait at the belt nor risking poor handling of checked baggage. At around 35 litres, depending on the variation (such as Cabin Lite, Cabin S or Cabin Plus), it’s enough for three to four days of considered packing.

Next, the Check-In functions as Rimowa’s workhorse. Designed for one- to two-week trips, it stretches into the 60 to 85 litre range. This is also the model most associate with the brand. Whether for family holidays or extended work trips requiring full suits and footwear changes, it adapts easily. With medium and large options, it lets travellers fine-tune how much they pack.

Then there’s the Trunk, which feels almost archival. Built for longer journeys and more generous packers, it occupies a peculiar space in the luggage landscape. Significantly taller and more capacious, it recalls the steamer trunks that transatlantic passengers once travelled with. Holding up to 105 litres, the Trunk and Trunk Plus comfortably handle trips beyond two weeks.

Together, these categories form a a well-rounded travel grammar, offering a size for every itinerary. From there, attention naturally shifts to materials. This is where Rimowa’s design language becomes even more distinct, with each material speaking to a different kind of traveller.

Aluminium remains the ‘OG’, available in either the Classic or Original lines. First introduced in the 1950s, its grooved construction remains the most iconic and instantly recognisable. While noticeably heavier than polycarbonate, the weight carries presence and purpose. Over time, dents and scuffs build a personal travel patina many owners value. Currently, the aluminium collections are available in Black, Silver, Titanium, and an exclusive Bronze Brown.

Polycarbonate, by contrast, appeals to the pragmatist. Growing in popularity in recent years, it is significantly lighter and flexes under pressure instead of denting. This allows the shell to absorb impact and recover with ease. Known as the Essential line, it retains the signature grooves. At the same time, it introduces a broader colour palette, blending function with fashion.

Then there is leather, Rimowa’s most elevated offering. Part-luggage, part-designer bag, the Distinct line moves closer to the language of heritage leather goods. Designed for the kind of considered, unhurried journeys where your bag is truly handled with care, it prioritises refinement. For now, it appears only in the Cabin size, offered in Navy Blue, Powder Blue and Taupe Beige hues.

Finally, the Hybrid category offers a balance between strength and flexibility. It combines a lightweight polycarbonate shell with robust aluminium corners and a reinforced frame. As a result, it enhances security and durability without adding excessive weight. It is a quieter, somewhat lesser-known option, yet no less considered in execution.

Whether you travel light for a weekend or pack extensively for a month, Rimowa offers a calibrated solution. Its thoughtful system of sizes and materials ensures every journey finds its match. Ultimately, it is not just about getting from point A to B. With Rimowa, you travel with intention, and always in style.
