Since undergoing several updates since its debut, the Evelyne now embodies Hermès’ equestrian heritage with modern sensibilities. This go-to favourite bag hasn’t just weathered the test of time and trends. Its understated yet practical crossbody design continues to solidify its status as an important classic at the French maison. Here’s a deeper dive into the enduring allure of Hermès’ Evelyne.

- The origins of the Evelyne are deeply intertwined with the equestrian world. In fact, it was initially designed to carry grooming tools and equipment. Hence, its functional design reflects the practical needs of horse riders in more ways than one.

- For example, the distinctive perforated H on the exterior is not just a design element, displaying Hermès’ logo. It’s actually a functional feature that allows for ventilation. Also, wearing it against the body with the H facing inwards is the proper way to wear the bag.

- This also makes sense as all Evelyne bags come with a snap button closure. Wearing it the ‘original’ way ensures the snap button closure faces outwards, thus making reaching for your belongings within easier.

- Despite typically boasting a full-leather exterior (there are exceptions, of course), the crossbody remains surprisingly lightweight, thanks to the unlined interior. This makes it an excellent companion, wherever you may take it.

- The minimalist Evelyne slides comfortably over the shoulder via a thick canvas strap. Selected sizes further feature an adjustable tab that adds versatility. It offers multiple ways of wearing, including over the shoulder or across the body.

- In 2016, a few tweaks transformed the OG into the new Evelyne Sellier. This iteration introduced refined details, such as a sleeker closing tab. Another redesigned element was the subtle H diamant emblem in embossed leather instead of perforations.

- While the Evelyne Sellier is rare these days, there are three staple sizes to look out for. Perfect for the grab-and-go, what most people call the mini Evelyne is officially the Evelyne 16 Amazone. Then there is the Evelyne III 29 and Evelyne III 33 that are its more spacious counterparts.

- While they typically come in Clemence leather, alternative materials are also available. These include renditions in felt and canvas, with leather embellishments and pull tabs. The assortment further ensures that there’s one for every need and occasion.

- All Evelyne III and Evelyne 16 Amazone bags feature removable straps, so that you can personalise them further. Switch them out for one of Hermès’ colourful Sangle straps, or perhaps the new A-Strap or Clou Medor.

- Prices for the Evelyne 16 Amazone start from SGD3300. Considered one of the entry-level bags at Hermès, it is also a good place to start your collection.
