With fashion houses’ recent obsession over anything woven of late, you will find countless choices in the market today but mostly in your ‘standard tote with a pair of top handles’ style.

Well, all except Versace and their quirky take on the quintessential picnic basket, evident in the La Medusa Basket Bag which made her debut during the Spring-Summer 2022 runway show.

Measuring just 15 cm by 8 cm and modelled after the classic basket shape, it comes with a pair of flaps on each side of the handle so you can lift either side to reach for your items within. Each La Medusa Basket Bag is handwoven using bamboo, and the construction seems pretty neat considering the difficulty in weaving smaller-than-small handbags.

And because it’s not a Versace bag without the iconic Medusa motif, you will find it on the chunky (and stiff) top handle. It’s one way of carrying the bag, but there’s also a thin shoulder sling, which many of you might simply leave as a decorative accessory instead.
