Earth Day is almost upon us (that’s 22 April) and for those who are seeking effortless ways to start your sustainable beauty journey, you’ll be glad to know that you can embark on a more earth-friendly one with Chanel’s eco-friendly N°1 De Chanel collection.

The anti-ageing line-up of skincare, makeup and fragrance, centred around Gabrielle Chanel’s emblematic flower the camellia, is developed with an eco-responsible approach. In other words, they put sustainably sourced ingredients and environmentally conscious packing first.

01 – Offering a sustainable approach to beauty, the products are brimming with up to 97 percent natural origin and renewable ingredients.

The antioxidant-rich red camellia blooms that lie at the heart of the range are grown at Chanel’s Gaujacq open sky laboratory and its sustainably sourced ingredients are chosen with intention for the least impact on the environment.

In an effort to reduce waste, other plant parts like petals and yeasts are also used. This includes camellia seed shells and wood shavings, which have been incorporated into the lid of the Red Camellia Revitalizing Cream.

02 – It also just got easier to recycle. Products are presented in recyclable FSC-certified cardboard boxes and 7 out of the 9 products are packaged in recyclable glass.

And although most of the products are housed in glass, the weight of the jars and bottles have been reduced. This means a lower carbon footprint when shipping them all over the world.

For the 2 products that aren’t housed in glass bottles, namely the Red Camellia Revitalizing Lotion and Powder-To-Foam Cleanser, they are made from molecularly recycled materials.

03 – To reduce disposables, less material is used. Products are free of single-use cellophane and instruction booklets have been replaced by QR codes that direct you to an online site with the required information.

The maison has also gone so far as to design sample sachets using a minimum of materials to further reduce its carbon footprint by half.

04 – No detail goes overlooked, right down to the ink used to decorate the bottles. For less energy consumption, organic ink produced at a lower temperature is used.

Same goes for the sleek matte-black lids, which contain recycled or bio-sourced materials, where ink has been replaced by engraving for a more energy-effective practice.

05 – You’ll also be glad to know that the radiance-giving Red Camellia Revitalizing Cream (SGD167 for 50 g, SGD142 for the refill) is refillable, a first for the brand.

The patented design lets you replace the internal tub once you’re done and refilling the cream twice allows greenhouse gas emissions to be reduced by half. All while keeping your skin healthy and hydrated. Definitely a win win!

The N°1 de Chanel collection is now available at Chanel’s Fragrance & Beauty boutiques, counters, and online via its e-shop.
