Happy #InternationalLipstickDay! Yes, it’s a thing that falls on 29 July annually where beauty aficionados pucker up and don their favourite lip colours. While lipsticks may have taken a back seat this past year with the norm of face coverings, there’s no stopping you from whipping out your most-loved bullet today and swiping on some vibrant pigment to put you in an even brighter mood.

In celebration, here’s a round-up of 5 of the most famous red lipstick shades, the rare breeds of crimson that flatter a wide range of complexions, have empowered many around the world and have stood the test of time.

01 – Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour (99 Pirate)SGD54
In the wise words of Coco Chanel, ‘If you’re sad, add more lipstick and attack.’ The same fervour can be found in the brand’s cult-favourite deep blue-based 99 Pirate, which was inspired by one of the signature shades always worn by the lipstick advocate who created her first lip colour collection in 1924.

02 – Dior Rouge Dior Couture in 999, SGD56
There’s a whole lot of history packed into this tiny tube. For one of his first fashion shows in 1953, Christian Dior created the brand’s first red lipsticks, 9 and 99. The shades were reinvented in 2013 to create the now iconic 999, which is also known as Dior Red and available in a host of different finishes from satin and matte to metallic and velvet.

03 – M.A.C Cosmetics Retro Matte Lipstick (Ruby Woo)SGD33
Believe it or not, this bestselling shade that launched back in 1999 was actually an accidental creation. The brand was tweaking its classic Russian Red, when a slightly less matte version using the same combination of pigments with a different base caught their eye. And just like that, the brighter and more dynamic Ruby Woo was born.

04 – Nars Lipstick (Jungle Red)SGD40
This warm scarlet was inspired by a scene from the 1939 film The Women and was one of the initial 12 lipstick shades created by Francois Nars for his eponymous brand. The vivid blue red has since been reinvented with a new formula and exclusive red packaging but is still all about pigment, performance and perfection.

05 – YSL Beauté Rouge Pur Couture (01 Le Rouge)SGD55
Aptly named 01 Le Rouge, this timeless couture shade was the first red lipstick ever created by the brand in 1978, when it first launched YSL Makeup. Described as the most neutral and purest red that’s composed only of red hues, the colour is still worn on catwalks today.
