When Au Départ made a comeback in September 2019, they did not stop at bespoke hard-sided trunks and miniature bags that expound on the brand’s extensive trunk-making heritage. Instead, they introduced an extensive range of bags for daily use (bigger styles in canvas/leather that are roomy enough for a day out), with today’s focus being the Le Grand Seine.

The Parisian luxury brand describes it as the perfect compact everyday bag, and it isn’t difficult to see why. Measuring 23 cm wide and 17 cm high, this roomy messenger was inspired by the hunter knapsacks found in Au Départ’s archives, with a depth (9 cm) that is spacious enough for your mobile phone, portable charger, as well as a compact camera for that budding photographer in you.

On the exterior, you will find the bag adorned with the brand’s cubic monogram cotton canvas, one that’s given a rubberised finish to ensure it stays resistant to daily wear and tear. Each bag is also finished with their stiff yet smooth Hannover leather, giving it that extra touch of luxe over on the edges (of the bag) and the shoulder strap.

Priding itself on its commitment to craftsmanship, the signature canvas is made entirely out of twisted yarns. Not only does this give it a heavy hand feel, you can also stay assured that the material is hardy enough to withstand the test of time. Other noticeable elements would be the fact that the Le Grande Seine is fully lined with soft suede, which more than makes up for its EUR1900 price tag (about SGD3000 inclusive of VAT).
