Another day, another brand to obsess over, with today’s spotlight on the Mini Trunk created by the recently-revived Parisian house, Au Départ. Following a stellar showcase of bags and trunks in September 2019, Au Départ looks set on charming the fashion world with its light-reflective jacquard canvas, a unique material which carries a three-dimensional effect that’s fun, fresh and modern all at once. For those who don’t already know, the French trunk-maker was founded back in 1834, making it one of the ‘early pioneers’ of luxury trunk-making, and was touted as a great that sat alongside Moynat, Goyard and Louis Vuitton, which were founded in 1849, 1853, and 1854 respectively.
Au Départ does not operate a retail store at this present moment, but they have plans to open temporary pop-ups in time to come. For now, you can always head to their online store to place an order, with Hong Kong and Singapore being the two Asian countries that are currently offered shipping services directly from Paris. Why Hong Kong? It is rumoured that one of the main owners is also the same man that runs K11 in the city. And Singapore? That’s easy, because everyone on this island is forever on the quest for the next big thing as far as bags are concerned.

The Mini Trunk (EUR3900 inclusive of VAT) is currently up for pre-orders online, with an estimated shipping date slated for end-September. Offered in two colours (Black and Orange), both coming in the brand’s signature reflective jacquard canvas. This piece, like all other Au Départ pieces, are made at ateliers in Italy, combining elements from the house’s heritage expertise in trunk-making, evident in the reinforced corners and metallic snap closures that are aligned perfectly along the smooth leather edges. Measuring 24 cm by 14 cm, the Mini Trunk opens to a suede lining, and the bag is finished with a detachable shoulder strap that allows for wearing it many ways on (or across) the body.
It’s worth mentioning that Au Départ has a selection of backpacks and totes for him and her as well, making it great for those who plan on getting a casual alternative to the Mini Trunk. They even have #iPhone11Pro and #iPhone11ProMax cases for those who love an eye-catching monogrammed piece, as well as a selection of funky accessories like playing cards and power banks which can all be found under the ‘Gifts’ section.
If you’re an avid fan of all-things monogram, Au Départ could be a strong contender considering it has almost two-centuries (with a break from 1976 to 2019) worth of history and heritage. Looking for something fresh and new that’s your usual departure from the common players? Au Départ could be it.
