You could say if there was one bag missing from the French luxury house’s extensive bag catalogue, the new Pont 9 would be the one that steps up to the mantle. To be released in Singapore this Friday (which is 29 May 2020, by the way), you could say it’s old-meets-new in a style that’s clearly vintage-inspired, and designed by Artistic Director Nicolas Ghesquière.
Measuring some 23 cm by 15 cm, the Pont 9 is crafted from lightly-padded calfskin that’s different from all the other house leathers you are already familiar with. Not only does the smooth calfskin give the bag a luxurious feel, keeping it so minimal also allows the 1930s archive-logo (known as the Louis Vuitton Circle) to take centrestage on the bag’s front flap. You will also see the same logo on the strap of this shoulder bag, which besides being a nice aesthetic touch, also acts as the clasp that allows you to adjust the length of the strap.
Opening via a magnetic Monogram Flower closure clasp that’s under the flap, the bag opens to reveal a roomy interior that will fit a good day’s worth of essentials. Even equipped with extra pockets and a zippered compartment to help you stay organised, the sides of the bag have an additional strip of leather running down on either side, which could mean it is there to provide additional structure and prevent premature sagging, which does sound kinda wrong but you get the idea, right?
It’s worth mentioning that there’s a considerable amount of artistry and detailing that goes into the Pont 9, from the reinforced seams to the treated leather to give it durability and resistance that allows it to withstand tiny accidents that will happen from time to time, whilst maintaining its silky and satiny texture.
The bag also requires 6 artisans to work on it from start to finish, from the pre-selection of leather to cutting out each component piece before they are mounted and stitched together, before the final QC checks to ensure only the best goes into every bag.

All in all, the Pont 9 will come in 5 colours. There’s the understated Crème and forever classic Noir, as well as brighter hues like Bleu Orage, Rose Dahlia and Summer Gold. Priced at SGD5350, it’s definitely one bag you’ll need to see up close in person in order to be able to appreciate all the work that has gone into each piece. And definitely the bag that will rightfully take its place as French luxury house’s new icon.
