The Chaîne d’ancre Bag made its debut on Hermès’ Spring-Summer 2020 runway and came in colours like Black and Brown. While some of you might be worried that your contents will peek through the holes, or even fall out, the good news is that the bag will be sold together with an accompanying silk pouch. The latter comes with a printed interior that features the Manufacture de Boucleries design by Gianpaolo Pagni, an artist and illustrator who was known for his intricate prints and patterns, furnished with a pair of leather cords on either end.
A true work of art, one can only imagine how many man hours went into the making of the Chaîne d’ancre Bag, and the fact that it’s way different from the bags and totes you’re all too familiar with at Hermès. How was it crafted? Well, imagine a single piece of leather that’s cut out to form the iconic Chaîne d’ancre links all around. Two halves are then joined and stitched together with a vertical leather strip running down the middle, along with two oval hoops at the top (identified by the reinforced stitching) that form the bag’s handles. What about the base? Well, flip the bag over, and you will find a perfectly oval Chaîne d’ancre link, which Hermès suggests will leave a beautiful print on soft surfaces like sand.
Crafted from Barénia calfskin (one of the highest quality leathers used at the French luxury house till this very day), the prized material requires a unique manufacturing process to create a smooth and tan leather that’s known to develop a unique patina over time. In fact, Barénia actually looks better over the years, and is known for its durability and capability to stay resistant to water.
The bag will be launching in Singapore anytime soon and priced at SGD19,400 each. You just need to head down to Hermès boutiques across the island if you know you want one.
