If you have been keeping up with Delvaux’s high-tech series of bags since its inception in 2015, you would have noticed an interesting pattern. The limited-edition series started out with the X Ray, a see-through version of the house’s Brillant bag that sparked off their trend of PVC designer bags we have come to know (and love). Next came the Dark Night in another Delvaux signature, the Tempête, one that’s transformed into a hybrid combination of plastic and silicone that’s sleek and lightweight all at once.
2017 gave rise to the Hero, which saw a return of the Brillant in a bold green vinyl with the numbers ‘1829’ (a nod to the year the house was founded) emblazoned in front. Just last year, we saw the creation of the Gladiator, one that’s expertly crafted from 15 different armour-like moulds to create patterned scales all around a dark grey vinyl Tempête body.
No prizes for guessing what 2019’s design will come in. Yes, the all-new Champion is crafted in the shape of the iconic Brillant, one that’s a perfect amalgamation of urban sophistication and heritage craftsmanship. The cutting-edge creation took 12 months of research and development to form a unique 3D-effect exterior, made using a specialised thermoforming technique by assembling panels of intricate materials that’s typically found in high-performance athletic wear.
These include materials like lycra, PVC and TPU, which is why the Champion is a perfect piece for luxury lovers who prefer a bag that isn’t made from leather or exotic skins. The other cool part of the bag lies in its base, finished in a sturdy rubber that’s made to look like the sole of a running shoe. The bag also comes with an extra canvas strap that’s decorated with the house’s tagline ‘From the Kingdom of Belgium’, finished in a graphic font for a modern look and feel.
Now, because the Champion is a limited-edition piece that’s only retailing for SGD2300, you will have to put yourself on the waitlist and place a full deposit before a piece is secured for you. If, however, you would like to view the bag up close before committing to it, the good news is that a sample is available at Delvaux’s boutiques at Marina Bay Sands and Scotts Square where you can get up close and cosy with it.
