Miu Miu: Is The Coffer Making A Comeback?

Readers of the blog will know that Miu Miu’s Coffer was one of the earliest designer bags that was featured regularly on this blog between 2007 and 2009. Available in a wide variety of colours back then (think Corallo (Orange), Fiordaliso (Blueish-Grey), Stone (Beige), Pewter (Dark Grey) and so on), it was one of the original IT bags that came with all the right design elements. A braided top handle, a puffy matelassé leather body, two snap button pockets finished with just the right amount of hardware detailing.

This June, Miu Miu has released an all-new piece (that’s yet to be named) which bears similarities to the Coffer that was discontinued several years back. Measuring 32 cm by 24 cm, it has got the same braided top handle, the additional shoulder sling, even the two external flap pockets with button closure are placed in the exact same positions as its predecessor, with the bag’s body coming in the very same matelassé leather that’s as Coffer and as Miu Miu as it gets.

The only real difference? Well, it is the addition of the jewelled buckle at the top, which is the same buckle you’ll find on the Miu Lady. Which brings us to these points. Was there really a need to include that extra embellishment? Why change it when it wasn’t broken to begin with? Or is this Miu Miu’s way of trying to make this once iconic bag relevant in this day and age?

Priced at SGD3000, maybe you should head down to the nearest Miu Miu boutique in Singapore and have a look for yourself before you decide. Is this a yay, or a nay? Or was this resurrection even truly necessary? What say you?
