Why I haven’t yet blogged about this beast of a bag escapes me, since I did already see it when I attended Louis Vuitton’s Spring-Summer 2017 regional presentation in Shanghai last year. Thankfully, I have readers like Jermone Chia who just wrote in today asking for my opinion on the Savane Steamer Backpack, so I thought, why not just do it now?
From Kim Jones’ much-acclaimed RTW collection for the boys, where he collaborated once again with British artists Jake and Dinos Chapman. The end result? A whimsically dreamy collection of wildlife as imagined by the brothers, made up of 5 beasts you’ll normally see on the African savannah, namely the elephant, the giraffe, the lion, the rhinoceros and the zebra.
With each bag or SLG you get a different animal printed on (sometimes 2 if you’re lucky), and with this reinterpreted classic, the Steamer Bag, you get the Elephant. And whilst the original Steamer Bags just come as is, the new ones come with a pair of straps at the back, just so you can wear it comfortably over your shoulders like a backpack.
Measuring some 45 cm by 32 cm by 16 cm, the backpack (which comes in Monogram Savane canvas) won’t be lightweight, and given its size, you’ll just be tempted to pile in as much as you can, resulting in a much heavier bag. With that said, however, this is truly a handsome beast, a collector’s piece if you will and one you’ll gladly have in your own collection for a long time to come. Just watch what you put in and you’ll be fine.
