Tiffany & Co. Elsa Peretti: The Small & The Beautiful

If you’ve ever received anything in a little blue box, chances are it was probably designed by Elsa Peretti, who joined the storied house back in 1974. Continuously designing till present times, you would have seen her beautiful creations in any Tiffany boutique, starting with everyone’s favourite, the Bean. In Elsa’s hands, the humble seed which gives all life became the perfect balance of material, form and surface, translated into precious pendants and earrings as well as the ergonomically-comfortable Bean purse that will sit ever so comfortably in the palm of your hand.

‘Style is to be simple,’ she says, a premise which could apply to any of her creations, including a fascinating creation simply known as Diamonds By The Yard. Believing that ‘the personality of a tiny diamond is strong’, each diamond is set with a smooth slim circle of metal surrounding the diamond’s girdle that allows it to shine in its best possible way. Sprinkling them on varying lengths of chain, it’s another timeless piece that can be worn during the day or at night.

Inspired by nature with a mind that was more curious than most, she often liked the challenge of distilling organic shapes to its simplest forms, from the elegant Starfish to the poignant Teardrop, and they also, in the words of Elsa Peretti herself, ‘have to last, not be discarded as soon as something else comes along’, because, she muses, ‘jewellery is not fashion’.

Available in silver, gold and platinum, maybe it’s time to get reacquainted with Elsa Peretti’s creations which you’ll find at all Tiffany & Co. boutiques across the island. But before that, take out some time to watch this short documentary on Elsa’s early years, her exciting years growing up and the premise behind her stunningly beautiful, yet simple, creations.
