Back in 1931 Gaston-Louis Vuitton displayed his personal collection of African tribal masks at the Paris Colonial Exhibition, which according to Wikipedia was a six-month-long fair which saw the French government bringing people from the colonies to Paris. And it’s from Gaston-Louis’s collection that the new Mask collection, from the French house’s Cruise 2015 collection, is based on.
Launched to coincide with Christmas, it’s also a very colourful collection of bags and SLGs with Louis Vuitton’s Monogram Canvas taking centrestage and then adorned with what I think looks like little masked humanoids, each focused on the clasp as far the bags are concerned. On the SLGs it’s just brightly-composed leather cutouts sewn onto the coated canvas, a welcome addition to an otherwise simply monogrammed base. In other words, fun!
So what can you get from the Mask collection? At last count there are 4 bags and 4 SLGs, from the Mask Pochette GM (SGD5150, shown above on the left in Beige) to the Mask Pochette Chaine (SGD2610, think WOC, it’s on the right in Blue). Then there’s my personal favourite, the Mask Pochette Cles (SGD900, the one with the red detailing) that’s good for both loose change and keys.
Other pieces you could check out include the Mask Sarah Wallet (SGD1780) and the Mask Luggage Tag that’s super adorable and retailing at SGD505. Now available at your local Louis Vuitton boutique, my only gripe is perhaps how high everything in this particular collection is priced but there’s a good reason for that though. Unlike regular Monogram Canvas bags and SLGs, the ones from the Mask collection needed a lot more man hours (and correspondingly, craftsmanship) to put together, which you’ll be able to see for yourself once you pick them up at the store.
