One would think that, given what I do professionally on a daily basis, it would be easy to shop for my own mother as far as bags are concerned, but truthfully, that’s not the case. She is one of the toughest women I’ve ever had to please; if it’s not big enough, or doesn’t have enough compartments on the inside, it won’t work. If there’s a pocket on the outside, even better.
But that’s not all. Ideally, it should be made out of leather, and yet somewhat lightweight, which I’ll only be able to achieve if I had Harry’s wand. Price wise, it should be affordable. Not eye-wateringly expensive like a five-digit Birkin, or something similarly overpriced, but of good value, if there’s even such a thing as far as luxury bags are concerned.
So after spending half an afternoon ruling out designer bags at Marina Bay Sands (too pricey, too small, too heavy, and/or not enough compartments), she sets her eye (and her heart) on the Monogram Empreinte Montaigne MM. Not in Amethyst (the image above is just for illustration purposes only), but in Noir that’s also finished in gold-tone hardware.
Made of supple monogram-embossed Monogram Empreinte leather, it’s the right size (33 cm by 23 cm) for ladies out and about, be it for tea with the girlfriends or shopping in town. Topped with a pair of top handles and a removable shoulder sling which is oddly a tad short (which Mum says is totally unnecessary because it would look best hanging off her arm anyway). Besides the fact that it comes lined with some fancy striped toile, there are also countless compartments on the inside, from a centrally-located zip pocket (‘Can put wallet here,’ she exclaims), to various patch pockets on either side.
And then there are the finer details, like the leather belt loop (that’s to keep the handles together and not splayed apart which can be quite unsightly), and the additional clasp that ‘closes’ the bag and keeps its contents secure, which honestly appeal to me as well, since these are features added in my opinion to enhance the user’s experience.
Priced at SGD4450 for the MM and SGD4750 for the larger one in GM (which I personally think is a tad chunky and not as cute at the end of the day), there’s also another variation in Monogram Canvas which is way cheaper but just doesn’t feel the same. Now available at Louis Vuitton boutiques islandwide, have a look at all 3 and tell me what you think. But as far as Mum is concerned, her mind (and her heart) is set.
