I consider it an occupational hazard, but every time a new bag lands in my lap, I’ll instinctively give it a thorough once-over, from its shape and materials used to its make (because while everyone can make a bag, not everyone knows how to finish it properly) and functionality.
Sometimes I stare at it long enough and see if there’s a ‘face’ (if I talk to my bags, they will need to have a ‘face’, right?), and in the case of the adorable S/S14 Chloé Mini Clare, look hard enough and you’ll see it. Slot screws on either end of the bag form the eyes, the long metal bar that runs across, its nose, and the dual layers of leather under the nose, the lips.
Jokes aside, the Mini Clare is an odd-shaped bundle of joy that I adore, its body resembling a dumpling that’s narrow at the top and gets roomier as you get to the bottom. What gives it character is that amount of detailing on these little wonders, from the one in raffia, cotton canvas and box calfskin in different colours that I had the pleasure of playing with myself (shown above), to the one in grained and box calfskin, all accented with shiny gold-tone hardware. There’s a shoulder sling at the back that can be removed (the Mini Clare works well as a clutch too) and it’s even more adorable that way IMHO.
Definitely one of the standout pieces for S/S14 in my books, do note that even with the temporary closure of Chloé’s stand-alone boutique in Singapore, you can still find the Mini Clare (and her bigger sisters) at On Pedder Scotts Square and DFS Galleria Scottswalk along Orchard Road, with prices starting from SGD1880 a pop. Cute, no?
