This is what I know about the Prada + Damien Hirst Entomology Bags, which I first spotted online via Love’s Instagram account. Limited to just 20 pieces (which in my books makes it a genuine limited edition worth your kidney and liver combined), it’s a collaborative piece between designer Miuccia Prada and artist Damien Hirst that’s more art than bag.
Featuring real insects encased in plexiglass (Miuccia does use lots of acrylics, plexiglass and PVC in collections for both Miu Miu and Prada, while Mr Hirst is most famous for his pickled and preserved animal installations, so this collaboration does really make a lot of sense), the shape of the handbag is also classic Prada, boxy, ladylike and quite elegant.
Sold via silent auction with proceeds benefitting the non-profit organisation Reach Out To Asia, the bags were created to accompany a pop-up in Doha, Qatar called the Pharmacy Juice Bar, much like the conceptual store created in 2005 in Texas, the Prada Marfa.
Presumably sold out (they are Damien Hirst after all), they are by far the most interesting
bugs bags I’ve seen in a while, even if staring at it for too long may leave you bug-eyed.
