Growing up, one of the most memorable movies I watched was Dead Poets Society, and in it, Robin Williams popularised the Latin phrase ‘carpe diem’ that’s usually interpreted as ‘seize the day’. Perhaps taking a leaf out of English teacher John Keating’s book, Montblanc launched the special edition Carpe Diem collection at the recently concluded Watches & Wonders haute horlogerie exhibition in Hong Kong, and the first thing you’ll notice about it is the slender red second-hand to symbolise its namesake maxim.
After all, each day that passes can never be relived, and each hour, minute and second that we spend at work or play becomes history that very hour, minute and second that it is over. Bold and outstanding against the all-white face with the other dials set in blue, it’s there to perhaps remind us to live each day to our best, to ‘seize the day’ and even, if a tad morbidly if I might add, to live like every day might be our last.
The Montblanc Star Special Edition Carpe Diem collection is made up of a series of 3 timepieces encased in stainless steel: the Star Quantième Complet (shown above) that’s a classically round wristwatch that boasts a full calendar comprising the date, day of the week, month and lunar phases on its dial. The noble black alligator leather strap is fastened in the classical manner, via an elegant pronged buckle, creating a watch that exudes masculine flair. The other 2 models in this collection include the Star Chronograph UTC and a 3-hand mechanical timepiece (the Star Automatic) with a stainless steel wristband variant.
Available in Singapore from November 2013, Montblanc’s master craftsmen have created watches that are not simply quality instruments that tell time, but timepieces that remind us with each glance to live in the present. In other words, carpe diem.
