Q: Dear Bagaholicboy, help. My kid brother is graduating soon and joining the workforce in a couple of months. I would like to get him a gift but I can’t decide. Should it be a pen which I think would be most appropriate for his line of work (and because it is time he stopped using the ones around the house we nick from hotel rooms), a bag (because his scruffy nylon backpack should only be used in school) or a SLG, like a new wallet or card case. What do you think, and some recommendations, please?
A: Hello Swee Ping, first let me just say you’re the big sister I never had, and even though I graduated a long time ago (make that a really long time ago), I wouldn’t mind a belated graduation gift either. But seriously, all 3 options you listed are pretty decent, and if your budget permits, why not get all 3 for your kid brother?
As far as pens go, nothing says ‘proper’ more than a writing instrument from Montblanc. And if there’s one line you should most definitely check out, it would have to be Meisterstück. Launched in 1924, it’s also one of Montblanc’s most recognisable, the white star emblem found on the cap of every pen. Comprised of Classique (think slim and elegant) and Le Grand de Montblanc (the thicker, chunkier ones that I personally adore), they come gold-glated or platinum-plated with prices starting at SGD510 for a Meisterstück Classique ballpoint.
If it is a bag you’re after, I like the two I blogged about recently: Epi Sac Plat (SGD2500 plus) and the Evolution Slanted Edge Briefcase from Serapian (around SGD980). You could also check out multi-label Cumulus at Wheelock Place for more affordable options or Tumi for their smart (and rather work-appropriate) backpacks. As far as SLGs go, the usual suspects apply; check out Burberry, Loewe and Prada for their sleek leather billfolds and card cases that are pretty ‘grown-up’.
And other bits…
1) June, I’m not 100% sure if the satin backpack from Raf Simons is available in SG. If you don’t mind doing a bit of online shopping you could check out Oki-Ni or Mr Porter.
2) Lisa, based on your email I gather you want a bag from a brand that’s not commonly available in Singapore. With that in mind, I recommend the following: Fauré Le Page, M2Malletier, Maiyet and Moynat (click on the names to see the corresponding posts).
