Elegant, whimsical, beautiful. These three words came to mind while watching Karl Lagerfeld’s new film ‘Once Upon A Time…’ during the private premiere on the evening of 8 May. Held at the Raffles Hotel as a prelude to the main event the following day – the debut of the Chanel Cruise 2013/14 collection, it was all that it was hyped up to be.
Set in Deauville in 1913 (yes, it’s been a hundred years since!), the short film tells of Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel on that momentous day when she opened her first fashion boutique. Played by none other than the ethereal Keira Knightley, Coco, with her aunt Adrienne (Clotilde Hesme) by her side, sets out to revolutionise ladies’ wear, beginning with the simple and lightweight hat.
‘Filming with Karl Lagerfeld is a real treat. I instantly agreed to be his Coco!’ gushed Keira when asked about the filming experience. She had originally thought it would be a silent film. She probably wasn’t alone in this thought either, given the black-and-white stylised cinematography Karl had employed.
Other actors include loyal Chanel devotees, models Stella Tennant, Lindsey Wixon and Jamie Bochert, all dressed suitably and delightfully in Chanel. Similarly smartly turned out were the boys, amongst whom was Jake Davis who played Coco’s great love, Boy Capel, to dreamy perfection, as well as Brad Kroenig and his son, Hudson, who played Coco’s adorable little nephew.
It may only have lasted just over 18 minutes but for present at the screening, such as Chanel ambassadors Zhou Xun, Anna Mouglalis and Astrid Berges-Frisbey, as well as the stars of the film, it was a mesmerising look into the creative mind of Karl Lagerfeld. As he himself said, ‘I inserted real anecdotes into a scenario I’ve imagined.’ Elegant, whimsical and beautiful, indeed.
