Before I start on the post proper, let’s address the elephant in the room since I’m pretty sure most of you will come to an instant conclusion even if you’ve read the post. And I’ve figured if Saint Laurent has no qualms pushing this particular design out, they won’t have an issue with people talking about it either.
At first glance it does look like the Birkin, and even after looking at it for a good 1968 seconds, it still looks like a Birkin. The shape’s pretty similar, as are the handles and even the tabbed gusset details (one on each side of the handle) won’t look out of place on the aforementioned bag, but that’s just about it.
Which means it’s time to wax lyrical about why I’m loving the Saint Laurent Classic Sac De Jour so much.
For starters, you can’t not love its pared-down simplicity and it’s probably safe to say that Hedi Slimane referenced JPG’s Shadow Birkin, which has also got to be one of my favourite variants of all time.
And then there are the thoughtful touches, from the brass feet to a zip that goes across the top of the bag that’s definitely useful. Polished calfskin on the outside and lined with suede, the made-in-Italy piece has compartments galore on the inside, good for all manner of personals.
Available in 2 sizes (or that’s what I’ve gathered so far), the one that measures almost 40 cm across retails for USD3950 (or HKD25,550) and will come in at least 4 hues: Beige, Purple, Red and of course, Black. Due to be released in the coming months, I’ll counting the days till I finally get to road test one in person.
