I’ll be the first to admit that while this may not be the contender for bags we fall for at first sight, there is more to it if you just give it a chance. At first glance, you’ll be reminded of how much it resembles the woven rattan base of those chairs our Asian grandparents used to sit on. Look past that, however, and soon you’ll see the intricate herringbone weave which I can only assume was done entirely by hand, woven over a metal frame to form the body of the clutch.
Coupled with the black leather straps that are further detailed with a plaited edge, you end up with an amazingly tactile clutch that’s also pretty stylish, one you can use with or without the additional shoulder sling.
This is also one of most environmentally-friendly designer bags from all of S/S12 since it is technically 80% bamboo, which is fast-growing and extremely hardy. Priced at SGD2595, it also comes in Purple but that’s currently sold out online at Burberry.
The Burberry Prorsum Herringbone Woven Rattan Clutch may not be for everyone, but I wouldn’t mind using it myself (I did say it does look unisex, didn’t I?), sans shoulder strap, of course. And I wouldn’t have to worry about mould either.
