Having just been invited to view select pieces from the Spring-Summer 2011 Mens Gucci collection up close, let me first say my brain is still swirling from having tried to take in all that I’ve seen, touched and smelled (yes, smelled, because the scent of fresh leather always makes me go weak in the knees).
A collection set around what Gucci calls the ‘dandy bohemian’, think Marrakech in the 70s, with all its decadent jet-setters, bustling markets, heady aromas and rich warm colour hues. The House’s most distinctive icons are also fully utilised, from the horsebit and the stirrup design elements to the extensive use of rawhide, Gucci’s emblematic leather.
Key items in the collection include safari-style leisure suits, soft silk jersey shirts printed with the House’s emblems, shorts in luxurious suede and jewellery made up of coral, horn and silver-plated Moroccan mesh.
On the bag front, there are quite many pieces I am excited over, including this weaved leather tote with the braided handles that comes with its own canvas drawstring pouch on the inside to keep your personals safe and secure.
Another piece I’m pretty psyched about is the odd-looking interpretation of a backpack with soft rounded corners that comes equipped with a long braided shoulder strap. Remove the straps at the back and you’ve got a shoulder tote of sorts, large and bulbously roomy.
Bags in burnished leather make up the rest of this season’s collection in the form of satchels and messengers, alongside totes in various designs. Note the thicker-than-usual shoulder straps made up of weaved leather, an ode to Gucci’s craftsman past and present who are equally skilled in this aspect.
And while I’m not a shoe-fanatic, this pair of rugged moccasins got me all hot and bothered. Somewhat resembling what Prada did for their S/S11 shoes for men, call this the slightly more edited, grown-up version. The carpet slippers in luscious suede (and made with a proper heel), comes embellished with a simple horsebit buckle and was another case of love-at-first-sight.
My personal wish list from the Spring-Summer 2011 Mens Gucci collection? The bulbous backpack, the rugged moccasins and this male model, though not necessarily in that order. And if the model is not available, I’ll settle for the suede shorts.
