Definitely a first for Singapore; the unveiling of the Spring-Summer 2010 ck Calvin Klein collection at Queenstown Remand Prison. A recently vacated prison (all the inmates were moved to a bigger facility), but a prison nonetheless. It was such a great pull that all of Singapore’s fashionistas showed up in full force. Everyone from pretty boys to well-heeled socialites to press and celebrities were present; everyone was just dying to get ‘incarcerated’.
We were ushered down long corridors flanked by huge steel doors, then through a series of staircases that went both up and down before we reached the central courtyard.
Look up and you’re greeted by rolls of concertina wire. It’s strangely exciting and sobering all at once.
And while the guest of honour was Creative Director Kevin Carrigan, this man stole the spotlight and had hordes of hyperventilating ladies chasing him all around the the courtyard for snapshots. Yes, that’s Taiwanese heartthrob Ethan Ruan Jing Tian. Top China model Liu Wen was also present, looking all swanlike and graceful in a stunning sheath gown.
Sadly though, Wentworth Miller was not present.
There was no fashion show, just models dressed in S/S10 outfits posing on high platforms within another area that was originally a small courtyard surrounded by tiny jail cells. All the jail cells had their steel doors removed, and if you looked in you would see installation art created specially for the event by Geoff Ang. We were however not allowed to take any snaps within this area so you’ll just have to wait for the official images to surface.
Thanks again Club21, you guys really do throw the best parties in (Queens)town.
