Q: Hey Bagaholicboy, just wanted to tell you how much I love your blog! Also I’ve got a quick query for you. Do you have any idea how much shipping will cost for a bag like the Bottega Veneta City East-West using vPOST?
It is going for 50% off now at the US site, and I think the local boutique doesn’t have it (though I did not ask). Was considering using vPOST but some friends told me it’s really not cheap and considering the size of the bag, it might not be worth it. Bottega Veneta doesn’t ship for free within US too either and there is the US sales tax to consider. Any advice? Would appreciate it so much!
A: Hi CY, thanks for your email. For starters, let’s put this whole matter in perspective. In the first place, luxury goods in the US are generally cheaper than in Singapore, so there is already a difference when it comes to prices. With the additional 50% off now for the tote you will only pay USD739 (instead of USD1480). From what I’m aware, it costs another USD15 for Bottega Veneta’s online site to ship to a US address. Do however check the fine print, some sites only take US issued credit cards, while others are more flexible.
Looking at vPOST’s site and checking with a few readers who have used this service, shipping costs are usually less than SGD50 (per item basis) from US to Singapore, and the whole order takes about 2 to 3 weeks to process. Once the package is here, you will also have to cough up another 7% GST if the order is above SGD400 (though I have heard of cases when it goes through without it happening).
I’ve had readers tell me they have saved anything from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars, depending on what they got. Ultimately whether you decide to buy or not is up to you, and remember this. Anything is worth it as long as you can justify the purchase to yourself. Also, the amount of joy and pride a bag that you love and enjoy will bring you can’t always be measured in dollars and cents.
And other bits:
1. Sharon, other US online sites that are offering sales now include Burberry, Gucci, Net-A-Porter and YSL. See above for clarification on vPOST and its procedures.
2. Joey, my heart is devoted to the Miu Miu Leather Coffer, so if you are asking me to decide on your behalf you’ll probably know which one I’ll pick.
3. Felicia, more practical than the Neverfull (for use as a travel/weekend bag) is the newly released Keepall45 With Shoulder Strap (SGD1860) which is available in Monogram Canvas, Damier Azur, Damier Ebene and Damier Graphite. Also check out the Carryall (SGD1870), from Vuitton as well.
4. Karen, the Miu Miu Wooden Handle Tote is still available at Net-A-Porter’s UK site (sans discount). It is sold out on their US site. You can get it now from the UK site (which ships direct to Singapore), or try waiting for the UK site’s sale to start which should happen anytime soon.
