Q: I’m going crazy trying to choose a bag for my mum. And I know you have the best opinion out there, so please help. I’m considering the Louis Vuitton Damier Ebene Neverfull MM, the Louis Vuitton Damier Ebene Trevi PM, or the Louis Vuitton Damier Ebene Berkeley. However I’m stumped.
My mum has always been iffy about bags with no zippers, especially since she travels around all the time. But I don’t know if that should hold her back from the Neverfull. Thoughts? The other two I’m considering because they seem to fit her style.
A: Dear Jien, this is what I will do. I will get her the Neverfull MM (SGD1080, but not yet released in Singapore) first and see her reaction. Yes it has no top closure, but since I am sure she already has dozens of bags like this, a change will be good for her. If she loves it, good for you.
But if she does not, at least you have the option of taking it back to Louis Vuitton immediately (or within 30 days) to get it changed to the Trevi PM (SGD2510, shown above) or the Berkeley (SGD2440). Between these 2, I prefer the Trevi more, simply because it suits a mature woman better.
Q: Hi Bagaholicboy! I’ve been reading your blog forever, and was wondering if you could help me out with selecting a nice bag for Momsie. So far she only has an Anya Hindmarch. I would love to get her one of the Monogram Vernis bags, but I heard the material is easily scratched and stained. Is there any truth in that? And do you think Monogram Vernis in Pomme D’Amour (Red) is way too bold for a 40 year old lady?
A: Dear Evan, to be honest how the bag fares after a while also depends on how the owner treats it. Yes, Monogram Vernis is tricky, and one has to be very careful with it, but I have also seen such bags that are 2, 3 years old but still in pristine condition. So the first question you should ask yourself is whether your mum would be suitable for such a ‘high-maintenance’ bag?
If your answer is yes, then we move on to picking the right bag for her. Frankly I do not love many of the bags in this range, with the exception of the Alma MM (SGD3180) and Alma GM (SGD3820) which are just stunning. The Summit Drive (SGD2560) is also very cute, and the 3 bags I just mentioned make great ‘going-out’ bags. For dinner when you need something dressier, you can choose between the Sunset Boulevard (SGD1280) or the new Rodeo Drive (SGD1700, shown above), which are smaller evening bags.
Age should never be an issue when it comes to picking a colour, and if your Mum can pull it off, why not? My Mum owns bags in Red too, and she loves using them all the time.
