Ask The Bagaholicboy #17 – A Bag For My Daughter…

Q: Hi Bagaholicboy, thanks for having such a great blog. I was diagnosed with a terminal illness just after I had given birth to a baby girl who is less than a year old.

I doubt I would be able to see her grow up. My question is, I have heard of branded bags that can last a long time, is this true? They also appreciate in value over time and I was wondering if there is any recommendation that you can suggest to me so that I can buy and keep it as a present for her when she is in her teens. I guess by then the bag will be a vintage or a classic piece. I appreciate all brands except Louis Vuitton and I truly hope that you can give me a few suggestions on the right bags to buy that can last. I am not sure if it might help on your suggestion, but my little girl’s name is Chloe. Please advise me. Thank you.

A: Dear Loving Mum, thanks for writing in, firstly let me say how sorry I am to hear about your condition. You have posted a very valid question and let’s see if I am able to help you on this issue. Generally, bags do not appreciate much in value so long as new editions keep coming out, unless they were limited edition or made with something rather precious. I would not recommend buying bags for investment, especially for long term periods, as new ones keep coming out all the time.

But buying one because it is beautiful and wanting to give your baby girl something she can call her own when she grows up, that is a beautiful gesture. I would definitely recommend the Chanel Classic Flap and the Hermès Birkin. Both these bags are considered classic icons, both have been around for a long time, and their demand and value has always stayed constant.
Love, Bagaholicboy

    Dear Loving Mum,

Your story is very touching. I hope you have the strength to get through your illness, to see your daughter grow up.

Apart from a bag, it would be really nice to write or film something about you and her family for her to remember you.

For me, I agree with Bagaholicboy that a Birkin would be nice. It transcends time, like the love for your daughter.

    Best wishes.
