Sure, Saffiano leather might be the one of the key signatures which you commonly associate with Prada, but nylon (specifically Tessuto) is another important signature of the Italian luxury house, which is also why they have constantly sought ways to improve it in terms of sustainability. In comes #PradaReNylon, an innovative collection that represents the next step in fabric technology, thanks to the sustainable textile which can be constantly recycled without affecting the quality of the material. There are bound to be many questions about the how and what, so read on to find out more about this groundbreaking material.

 – The integral part of the #PradaReNylon collection would have to be the choice of ECONYL® yarn, a regenerated-nylon material that is made of recycling discarded plastic collected from landfill sites and oceans around the world.

 – The production process starts with the gathering of waste materials (think carpets, fishing nets and unwanted nylon) before it goes through a regeneration and purification process through chemical de-polymerisation to gain its original purity. The material is then re-transformed into polymers and threads through a new polymerisation process, giving you the renewed and sustainable material, Re-Nylon.

 – Re-Nylon is lauded because it actively contributes to the reduction of global warming, up to 90% in comparison to virgin nylon yarn.

 – What started as a capsule collection of just six #PradaReNylon bag styles for men and women in 2019 has now grown into an entire wardrobe comprising accessories, footwear and for the very first time, ready-to-wear, as seen in the all-new 2020 collection.

 – This year also sees both Prada’s nylon gabardine and nylon Piuma (the softer, silk-like version) being reinvented into Re-Nylon materials, making this a major step toward Prada’s commitment to sustainable practices both now and in the foreseeable future.

– As far as RTW is concerned, you will be able to find a selection of cocktail dresses for ladies and single-breasted overcoats for men, as well as padded jackets, tees and trousers catered for both genders.

 – Several highlights include the reworking of Prada’s iconic 1984 backpack into parts of a dress, found over on front pockets, buckles and shoulder-straps detailing that echoes Prada’s utilitarian design to perfection.

– There will also be footwear options such as the Monolith combat boots and sneakers which come in Re-Nylon, as well as an expanded accessory range that includes hats, belts and new bag designs that all feature the #PradaReNylon logo.

 – The inimitable triangle logo has now been reworked into a looped arrow, signifying the regenerative life of Re-Nylon, which will sit alongside the OG logo on most pieces. It also represents Prada’s goals of only using regenerated nylon by the end of 2021, a bold move by today’s industry standards.

The good news? Singapore will be getting selected pieces from the Prada Re-Nylon 2020 collection, so you can head down to ION Orchard from 3 October 2020 to take a look and make your contribution toward a sustainable future with Prada.
