Apple: 10 Things To Know About The iPhone X

With 2 days to go before Apple’s latest iPhoneX is launched in Singapore, I was able to get my hands on a loaner from Apple Singapore, which would explain this short video. And after you’re done chuckling, here are 10 things to know about the new phone.

01. The screen is 5.8 inches end-to-end, and features a Super Retina OLED screen that’s specially designed for the iPhoneX, which displays bright beautiful colours in a 1,000,000 to 1 contrast ratio. While the phone is smaller than the iPhone8Plus, the screens are almost the same size but coming from using an iPhone7Plus myself, it will definitely take me some time to get used to it. Because it is true what they say, #sizedoesmatter.

02. One of the most talked about features had been Face ID, which is now the key way to unlocking the iPhoneX (bye bye, Touch ID). Face ID is highly intuitive; imagine it as a 3D scanner of sorts that essentially places more than 30,000 invisible dots on your face to create your unique key. It is also adaptive, so changes to your face over time will also be noted and updated accordingly. If, however, you were one of the 3 Chinese women who did their plastic surgery in Korea who were then not allowed to leave the country because their faces didn’t match their passport photos, Face ID wouldn’t work either. Really.

03. Another concern relating to Face ID? Your boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife/father/mother trying to unlock your phone by waving it in front of your face while you are asleep. No, it wouldn’t work either, because your face needs to be responsive. Placing a photograph of yours in front of it won’t work as well, because the camera needs to sense a 3D face, not a flat, 2D one.

04. But if you are still uncomfortable with the whole Face ID thing, just disable it and access your iPhoneX via your 6-digit passcode. Or if Face ID suddenly refuses to give you access for whatever reason, you can also bypass it by swiping up and entering your passcode.

05. Animoji. Ok, this is really fun, or really scary, depending on how you want to look at it. Simply put, it analyses more than 50 different muscle movements and mirrors your expressions on a selected set of emojis (think dog, money, panda, even an alien or a unicorn) that will allow you to record a 10-second message that can be sent out via iMessage. Or save it as a video and upload it to Instagram for extra laughs, which is exactly what I did.

06. The TrueDepth camera is also now available on the front of the phone, which is armed with an array of sensors and projectors that ensure accuracy for FaceID as well as Animoji. It also aids in creating a depth effect for your selfies, giving you that bokeh background that was previously only available as the Portrait function on the cameras at the back.

07. I wouldn’t recommend you actually try this, but the iPhoneX is water-resistant for up to 1 metre for under 30 minutes. Dropped your phone into the drain? No problem. Spilled water on it? No issue. Left your phone in your jeans pocket that’s now in the washing machine? If it is set to Quick 20 it should be fine. I think.

08. Available in 2 finishes (Space Grey and Silver), it features durable glass on the front and the back that allows for wireless charging. As for the sides, what used to be aluminium alloy is now a surgical-grade stainless steel band that gives a polished finish. Shiny. And perfect.

09. Armed with an A11 Bionic Chip which essentially allows you to run a gazillion apps at a go, it also allows the phone to process augmented reality experiences in 3D games and apps that are all the rage now. Fun.

10. One last thing. With the cameras on the back of the iPhoneX now switched to a vertical position and armed with a larger (and faster) 12 megapixel sensor, it means high-end optical zoom (that’s 10x for photos, and 6x for videos) perfect for stalking your crush or your ex from afar…

So.. It’s basically an Android with an Apple case (except for the Face ID)… nah… going with the cool kids really limited edition and innovative Pixel, I’d even switch to Samsung, that also has all this already. But Pixel is the IT phone for already 2 years now.
