Hermès: The Building Blocks Of Any Good Collection

The saying ‘great things often start small’ is particularly apt in today’s post, especially when it concerns small leather goods from this French luxury house. And while it’s true that they are pricey and never go on sale, it is still better to invest in what I consider the ‘building blocks of any good collection’ instead of perpetually going after the same SGD99 sale wallet that you’ll only use for a month at most.

Besides, nothing is more essential than SLGs especially since when we have to use them almost every single day. And there’s no better way to start small than with pieces from Hermès’, all of which come in the lushest of leathers and richest of colours. Catering to various needs (and either gender), here are 12 summarised in 12 words which characterise each piece and their accompanying function.

First up, for those who insist on having their CARDS specifically in a card holder, and COINS in a coin holder, the Guernesy Card Holder and Bastia Change Purse on the right will do the trick, keeping the respective items neatly in place. As for those looking for something SMALL, there’s the Silk’in Compact Wallet that comes with a silk lining interior for cards and cash, with a central zip pocket for coins and keys. Zip it all in and you’re good to go with a small, but handy wallet. LARGE can be subjective to most, but that’s nothing quite as big as the Passant Long Wallet. Measuring 21 cm across, the Passant Long Wallet comes with a removable card holder and zipped coin purse that can be easily tucked under the leather loop and carried out as a single purse.

Moving on are four others that lean toward the flashier options for different individuals. For DAY, the Dogon Duo Wallet in a delicate pink fits all your essentials within a roomy interior that’s large enough for a number of credit cards and bills, with 2 additional pockets for any extras. The great thing about the Dogon lies in the Clou De Selle closure in GHW, that’s grown to become a signature element easily recognisable by Hermes aficionados. Moving on to NIGHT, the black Tohubohu flat pouch comes in at 29 cm wide and 15 cm high that’s big enough for a night out and about.

Next up, MEN are always on the hunt for something classic and free of logos and monograms on the exterior. It has to be long, to keep their bills uncreased, and roomy enough for spare business cards and the such. The Manhattan Wallet offers all that and more, coming in varied bi-colour options that’s too good to resist. As for the WOMEN who want something bright and chic, the Soie-Cool 3/4 Wallet is pretty much perfect, coming in a beautiful floral printed exterior and a zip to seal all your contents neatly within.

Next up, these 4 SLGs may not be used as frequently as the other 8, but should still retain a special place in your SLG wardrobe for that very special occasion. For starters, be the star of any PARTY with the Mini Convoyeur, which is essentially a wallet-on-chain, armed with an extra strap to sling onto your body for that fuss-free (and most importantly, hands-free) look.

Sitting atop the Mini Convoyeur is an ICONIC piece, known as the Constance Compact Wallet which features the signature H tab closure that’s super sophisticated to boot. Besides, nothing says Hermès better than having a giant H in GHW right on the front of your wallet. On your TRAVELS, simply take the Tarmac Passport Holder with you to stay cool and chic while getting on board. And last but by no means least, is the Kelly Wallet, another Hermès’s signature which carries an air of EXTRAVAGANCE with it. The twist lock? Gorgeous. The Kelly lock pull-tab on the interior? Extra gorgeous. It’s a wallet that’s filled with extra details within that makes it oh-so-special, a coveted piece amongst the Hermès devotees, and an exceptional one to add into any SLG collection, should you have your other basics all covered and sorted.

So now you have it, 12 essential SLGs that form the building blocks of any SLG collection. From the functional cardholders to the exceptional pieces, there’s definitely something for everyone.
