Burberry Prorsum Orchard In Quilted Nappa Leather

Every season a designer will launch a key bag, one that encapsulates the best of the collection, so to speak. And with F/W12 Burberry Prorsum, that bag has got to be the Orchard, an oddly shaped bag at first glance no doubt, but one that starts growing on you the minute after.

Available in at least two sizes and a myriad of colours and materials including suede, my personal favourite has got to be the ones in quilted nappa leather that remind me of wooded forests and rolling countrysides. Made in Italy, I’m loving the smaller ones that measure 39 cm by 34 cm, each composed of quilted leather and trimmed off with hand-finished suede handles.

And that’s not all. There’s also something about oversized chunky hardware in the form of the zips that’s so proportionately wrong that it’s right, and of course, the animal heads (or is it busts) that adorn each bag and makes it a winner in my books.

Crafted using bespoke lost-wax casting, each head (or bust) is delicately created by Burberry’s Venetian craftsmen. The heads are first hand-carved in wax and a mold then made around it. Molten metal is poured into the shell to form the head. Finally, the metal head is hand-finished to refine the minute details, making each piece unique and one of a kind.

Which also explains the price of the bag, coming in at SGD4295 for the smaller one and SGD4695 for the larger one. Or check out the regular striped suede ones (sans head) that start from SGD2795, which while more affordable, just isn’t the same without those ornamental animal heads.
