Gucci: Bamboo Retrospective Exhibition At Marina Bay Sands

October 29, 2010   |   3 Comments

Today marked the opening of Gucci at Marina Bay Sands, as well as the launch of the retrospective travelling exhibition featuring archived pieces from Gucci’s collection of the iconic Bamboo in Singapore. Originally created in 1947, the exhibition features 20 original pieces from the 40s to the 60s, each as unique and special as the next.

And despite having so much happening around me (beautiful people, free-flowing champagne and the presence of a certain Mediacorp princess), I did find some time to mull over each piece.

Take the ones shown above for example. If you think the pattern looks familiar (top), you’re right. Gucci adapted the same pattern (Diamante) for their recent bag collections. Made in the 60s, the body is actually fabric with a natural bamboo handle and clasp.

Another one that caught my eye was the multi-coloured hemp and pigskin Bamboo (second from top), also from the 60s. I’m loving the stripes and how they remind me of a neapolitan ice cream sundae. And last but not least, a Bamboo (third from top) in floral hemp and named the ‘Leonardo’.

Besides the lovely vintage bags, I also got to meet artiste Jeanette Aw, who was introduced to me, and gamely posed for snapshots during the exhibition. Dressed in F/W10 Gucci (what else would it be, right?), the girl may be in small in stature but more than makes up for it with her megawatt smile.

Stayed tuned over at my Facebook fan page if you want to see more archived pieces and snapshots of Ms Aw, and don’t forget to head down to Marina Bay Sands before 4 November 2010 to catch the exhibition for yourself.
