Ask The Bagaholicboy #97 – I Need A Backpack And Other Bits

April 2, 2009   |   5 Comments

Q: Hello Bagaholicboy, I have been an avid follower of your blog for a while now, it’s my daily must-read! I need help that I hope you can offer me some advice on. I’m looking for a nice looking chic backpack that’s not schoolboyish, small or too feminine. And till now I can’t find a decent one! Please help me on this.
E.L

A: Hi E.L, frankly in this day and age not many men would carry backpacks, especially since most would associate them with school-going days. Women also, will be inclined to see a blind date again if he was carrying a briefcase or a tote instead of say, a backpack. But I digress, and let’s get back to your query. Since you did not state a budget or preferred material, here are a few options you can check out.

First up, the Louis Vuitton Damier Géant Canvas Bongo, composed of tough canvas, aluminum hardware and finally, trimmed with cowhide. Priced at SGD2410, I’ve got a feeling you may not like it much since it has the words ‘Louis Vuitton Paris’ emblazoned boldy on the front but I thought I’ll try anyway. Next up, we’ve got the Jack Spade Cordura Backpack that retails for USD225. Not sure if Kate Spade at Raffles City Shopping Centre stocks it, but I am sure they will bring it in for you if you ask nicely. Alternatively, do also check out Tumi (Raffles City Shopping Centre) or the Killspencer Special Ops Backpack in Black (USD300) which can be shipped in upon request.
Love, Bagaholicboy

And other bits:
1. Joel, actually the Agnès b. Voyage Nylon Duffle (SGD415) is a great buy, it’s tough, roomy and has more compartments than one actually needs which is always useful. I also like the Filson Small Duffle Bag (USD215 before shipping), which is handsomely rugged.

2. Christina, the Belen Echandia Take Me Anywhere (in my personal opinion) only looks good in colours like Tan and Taupe. No metallics please, it just looks off. Also, do consider the new Parker collection from Coach that comes in soft, buttery leather that’s very affordable as well. I adore the Coach Parker Leather Shoulder Bag which costs just SGD869!

3. AA, definitely get the Longchamp Le Pliage Handbag (‘the A4 one with no zip’) which retails for SGD147 in Singapore. It’s a better buy over the other one since heavy loads will only stretch the handles further which just ends up being an eyesore.

4. WWHA, as much as I love the Louis Vuitton SC Slim Suede Coal, if you’ve got the budget for the Bottega Veneta Knot Clutch get that instead. It is definitely a classic timeless piece that you will only love more and more in time to come.

5. Sammy, if your evening clutch has to be from Louis Vuitton and your choices are between the Monogram Multicolore Marilyn and the Monogram Motard Minaudiere, definitely go for the latter instead.

6. Esther, I just checked out the Bally Vilda in Putty online and I think it’s gorgeous! Why bother what your friends say? So long as you love it (and it is well within your budget) get it!

What about the ne Tumi Sundance Alamagordo backpack? http://uk.tumi.com/sundance/alamogordo-backpack/
About 500€… It is my favorite and much “chicer” than the other two. IMHO, the LV variation does not offer anything besides the gaudy brand name “emblazened” across it. Shudder…

So my bf thought that this was MY blog… but, I pointed out that am not from Singapore… although I am familiar with Raffles (where it seems you go shopping alot!), as I worked for Raffles before, here in the States.

Anyway, I love bags, as you can tell… and have several, including the Jack Spade field bag (vertical) messenger… and love my recent Tumi purchase: http://www.tumi.com/voyageur/sumatra-crossbody/
ok… it was on the "women's" side… but, I was looking for a nice everday bag, that would carry my phones (iphone and blackberry), earphones, contact lens case/drops, wallet, passport, notebook, business cards, keys, eye glasses, etc… Now I know why women carry purses… And, in black, well, it's not too feminine, right?

It also matches my brief: http://www.tumi.com/voyageur/t-pass-cornwall-business-brief/
